At St Joseph’s we aim to provide a welcoming and supportive library that contributes to providing quality education based on Gospel values. We boast the most spectacular view of the Manning River, which makes every visitor envious of our space. It is the heart of the school community where everyone in the school belongs, communicates and crosses paths.
Our core mission is to promote a love of reading and learning, which underpins all the decisions concerning collection development and events. To further encourage reading there are a range of activities throughout the year including author visits, Joey’s Reading Challenge, in-school challenges, Library and Book Week activities.
The library learning program supports classroom teachers in helping students to develop confidence and competence in using learning technologies to acquire knowledge and skills to become information literate.
Students from Kindergarten to Year 6 come to the library for 50 minutes every week with the Teacher Librarian, where they can investigate and practise an aspect of library learning with outcomes linked to the English Syllabus and other Key Learning Areas. The content of these lessons, while encompassing information skills and technology, will be the result of direct collaboration between the teacher librarian and the individual class teachers.
Students also visit the library each week with their classroom teacher for library borrowing. We require students from Kindergarten to Year 2 to bring a library bag, which encourages them to look after the books. All students learn responsibility for selecting, borrowing, reading and returning their books.
